RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's cross country teams both competed at the Big West Championship on Saturday, and the Gaucho men battled to a second-place finish while the women finished third in this competitive meet. Senior Anthony Masci finished the Men's 8K run in 7th place with a time of 24:11.1 helping the Gauchos take second overall on Saturday at the Big West Championship.
Sophomore Jeremy Acosta finished in 12th place with a time of 24:18.6 while Junior's Bhavic Kanzaria and Juan Paredes finished 15th and 16th. Respectively, Senior Andrew Whicard and Sophomore Bryce Rausa finished 18th and 25th allowing the Gauchos to finish the meet with six of their nine runners finishing within the top twenty-five. Senior Andrew Pilavjian, Junior Baxter Frick, and Freshman Kenneth Raedel finished 30th, 34th, and 40th at the contest. The Gaucho men finished with 68 total points and a total time of 2:01:55.20.
Senior Ashley Beechan led the Gaucho women to an astonishing 6th place finish in a time of 20:48.0. Not too far behind her were teammates Sophomore Dani Moreno and Senior Andrea Jacobs who finished 7th and 9th with times of 20:49.5 and 20:58.9. Honorable Gaucho mentions would include Senior Callie Mulgannon, Senior Justine Diaz, Junior Sarah Vitug, Freshman Lauara Beresford, Sophomore Christine Cooperstein, and Sophomore Ari Selix who finished 18th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 33rd, and 64th. The Gaucho women finished with sixty-two total points and a total time of 1:45:21.50.
Both the Gaucho men and women will return to action on November 12th. These two teams will compete in the West Regional Championships in Stanford, California.
