Gaucho Women Dominate in Season-Opening UCSB Lagoon Open, Men Capture Second

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women dominated the field as they opened the 2007 season at the Annual UCSB Lagoon Open on the UCSB campus Saturday morning. The Gaucho women took the first six places in the 5-kilometer race topping Cal Poly, 15-53 and Westmont, 15-78. The Gaucho men took second in the 8-kilometer race with Cal Poly taking the race 20-43 over UCSB and 20-81 over Westmont.

In the women's 5k, three Gauchos came in at 18:09: Megan Lewis, Bethany Nickless and Danielle Domenichelli. Liza Hitchner (18:10), Alyssa Brown (18:24) and Andrea Jacobs (18:27) rounded out the top-six. Cal Poly's top finisher was Kim Donatelli who posted a mark of 18:28, while Westmont's fastest time was 18:54 by Anna Stumbo.

The men's 8-k was won by Cal Poly's Phillip Reid who ran a time of 24:50. Fellow Mustang Troy Swier finished just behind Reid, clocking in at 24:52. Tim Aukshunas was the top UCSB finisher, coming in third with at 24:54 and Scott Smith placed fifth at 24:59. Westmont's top finisher was Robert Cherry who captured 13th place with a mark of 25:38.

The three-race event began with an alumni and community 5k that was won by Craig Winchard with a time of 20:43.8. Gaucho head coach Pete Dolan took fourth in the race with his mark of 20:50.9.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action on Sept. 15 when they compete in the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.
