TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The UC Santa Barbara women's cross country squad traveled to Indiana this weekend, where they placed 11th in the Blue Race of the NCAA Division I Pre-National Invitational. Bethany Nickless led the Gauchos once again with a 22nd-place finish.
Stanford won the race with 102 points, and were the only team from the western region in the top 10. The Gauchos were the next-best from the west, finishing 11th overall with 293 points.
Nickless' time of 20:50 was about a second faster than Stanford's Alicia Follmar, who finished right behind in 23rd place. Closely following was UCSB's Megan Lewis, who placed 30th with a time of 20:56.
Conditions at the course were excellent and times were fast, as several records would be broken by the end of the day. Florida State's Susan Kuijken was the winner of the Blue Race, finishing the 6k course in 19:55. Her time is a new course record, eclipsing the previous mark of 20:01 by nearly six seconds. Teresa McWalters from Stanford was 2nd with a time of 20 minutes even, with her teammate Arianna Lambie finishing 3rd in 20:01.
Next Friday, Oct. 19, the Gauchos will travel to Fullerton, Calif. for the Titan Invitational. The meet will be hosted by Cal State Fullerton, and the women's 5k is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
