SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UCSB men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Riverside on Saturday for the 2010 Big West Cross Country Championships. The women's 6K meet will start at 8:45 a.m. while the men's 8K will follow at 9:30 a.m. Both races will be held on UC Riverside's Ag/Ops Course.
The Gaucho women are looking to repeat as league champions for the first time since 2006-07. They are led by three runners - Amanda Moreno, Breanne Strenkowski and Crystal Reed - who finished in the top-10 of the 2009 championship, helping the team to the title.
Moreno has been UCSB's top runner in 2010 and has recorded the best 5K and 6K times in the Big West this season. Most recently, the Escalon, Calif., native finished 10th in the White Race at the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. She ran the 6K course in 20:34.7. Srenkowski finished 28th in the race of 274 runners at 21:00.6.
The Gauchos toughest competition for the league crown is expected to come from among Cal Poly, UC Davis, Long Beach State and UC Riverside.
On the men's side, UCSB will look be among the challengers to Cal Poly, which has won seven straight championships. The Gauchos are led by sophomore Juan Paredes and freshman Jeremy Acosta. The Paredes-Acosta duo, along with Andrew Pilavjian and Doug Whichard, have recorded top-10 Big West times in the 8K this year.
UC Davis and host UC Riverside, along with UCSB, are the teams most likely to threaten the Mustangs stranglehold on the Big West title.
Event parking for spectators will be in Lot 30, on the northwest corner of Canyon Crest and Martin Luther King (once on MLK, Lot 30 is on your left prior to Canyon Crest). The parking fee will be $5 per car.
Admission to the 2010 Big West Cross Country Championships will be $5 per person over five years old. Free admission for Big West students and children under five.
