IRVINE, Calif. -- Pete Dolan was awarded the 2009 Big West Coach of the Year Award in women's cross country, after leading the Gauchos to their fifth Conference Championship in the last seven years.
UCSB re-captured the crown after a one-year hiatus, for their seventh crown overall. The women's program has won titles in 1993, 1994, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009, all under Dolan's guidance. He has now won seven coach of the year awards in women's cross country, and has coached UCSB athletes to All-Conference honors 17 seasons in a row.
The Gauchos scored 51 points to win the title, ahead of second-place UC Davis (61 points) and third-place Cal Poly (74 points). The top runner for UCSB was Crystal Reed, who completed the 6k UCR Agricultural Operations Course in 20:43.45 to place fourth individually.
This weekend the men's and women's cross country squads will travel to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA West Regional. The meet will be held on Nov. 14 at the University of Oregon.
