SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team's junior right winger Rodney Michael was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week, while senior right wingback Noah Billingsley was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week, it was announced by the two organizations on Tuesday.
Michael also earned a spot on the College Soccer News Team of the Week and joined Billingsley on the Top Drawer Soccer team as an honorable mention.
Michael earned the accolades after recording a goal and an assist in each of the Gauchos' victories vs Sacramento State and at No. 22 Cal State Fullerton. Both of the Freetown, Sierra Leone-native's assists were on game-winning goals, assisting Ballard McBride's 53rd minute opener in Wednesday night's matchup and recording the helper on senior striker Will Baynham's 9th minute strike at Fullerton.
Billingsley became the first player in the Big West Conference this season to record three assists and the first Gaucho to achieve the feat since Memo Arzate in 2003 against the Titans on Saturday night. He had the primary assist on Santa Barbara's second, third, and fourth goals.
"That was amazing tonight," said Billingsley after the Gauchos' victory in Fullerton, "I don't think we've won a game, 5-nil, in my four years being here. That was great to be a part of, and to do it away from home is crazy."
The 12th-ranked Gauchos look to avenge last season's 1-0 conference defeat against UC Riverside on Wednesday night at Harder Stadium. The action begins at 7 p.m. and will be livestreamed on BigWest.TV. As always, live stats will be available on the men's soccer schedule page.
