SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Roach has been named as the Big West Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Roach made a season-high nine saves at UC Davis last Wednesday and recorded a four-save shutout at CSUN on Saturday night to earn the nod, helping the Gauchos stay unbeaten on the road and gain two crucial points to keep hopes of a Big West regular season championship and no. 1 seed in the upcoming Big West Conference Tournament alive.
The Santa Barbara native posted a 0.41 goals against average and .929 save percentage over the course of the two matches. The only goal he allowed, at UC Davis in the 1-1 draw between the Gauchos and Aggies, was an own goal off a corner kick.
The award is his second weekly defensive honor of the season and his Santa Barbara career, after having earned it on Oct. 7 after UCSB picked up a 2-2 draw at then-No. 25 San Diego and a 3-1 win at Cal Poly.
UCSB heads into its final match of the Big West season at Cal Poly on Saturday night in San Luis Obispo. The action begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on BigWest.TV. The link to the broadcast can be found on the men's soccer schedule page.
