SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's swim team won its first meet of the year by a score of 150.5-111.5 against Pac-12 opponent Utah on Friday afternoon at Campus Pool.
The seniors stole the show, especially Joe Lastelic who won first place in the 1000 Free and 500 Free with times of 9:25.90 and 4:30.91. In the final race of the afternoon, the 400 Free Relay, Utah jumped out to an early lead and UCSB was still behind when Lastelic dove in to finish the race. He made a late comeback, and the Gauchos ended up tying for first place.
Theo Andrews, a senior, won first place in the 200 Free (1:40.81), and was also part of the Gauchos' 400 Free relay "B" team which won third place (3:03.90), only two-tenths of a second behind the teams that tied for first.
Another senior, Doug Nogueira, had three first place finishes, in the 100 Back (50.00), 200 Back (1:50.01), and 200 IM (1:51.77). He also swam backstroke for Santa Barbara's 200 Medley Relay "B" team leading off with a 22.98, which finished second with a time of 1:31.46.
Junior Justin Nguyen dominated freestyle sprints, touching the wall first in both the 50 and 100 Free with times of 20.47 and 45.49.
Dominic Falcon, a freshman, had three strong races in his first college meet, finishing first in the 200 Fly (1:50.96). He also finished second in the 200 IM (1:54.57) and third in the 500 Free (4:37.13).
Senior Theo Andrews won the 200 Free, finishing in 1:40.81.
The Gauchos will return to action tomorrow as they have an intrasquad exhibition at 9:00 a.m. at Campus Pool.
