SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Junior point guard Danae Miller scored a career-high 31 points and freshman guard RyAnne Walters made her debut for the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team, but the Gauchos were defeated by San Jose State in letheir non-conference matchup on Friday night at the Thunderdome.
San Jose State answered back with a run of its own, putting together a 9-2 stretch that shaved the Gauchos' advantage to 11-9 with 2:50 left in the first quarter.
Despite freshman point guard Johnni Gonzalez's triple that extended the lead to 14-9, the Spartans would finish the first quarter strong to narrow the Gaucho lead to 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.
A relatively even second quarter followed, but Santa Barbara outscored the visitors by a point to further its lead to 31-27 at the half.
Over the course of the third quarter, the Spartans turned their four-point deficit at the break into a six-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter after a 25-point period, led by guard Ayzhiana Basallo's 14 as she converted on all eight of her free throw attempts in the quarter.
San Jose State kept UCSB at a distance for much of the fourth quarter, until freshman center Ila Lane made it a two-possession game with 2:11 left in regulation, cutting the Spartan lead to 69-65.
The Gauchos had momentum on their side, and Coco Miller delivered a jumper to pull the Gauchos within two with 1:41 to go.
One Spartan miss later, Danae Miller sank a trey, completing her career-high 31-point night, to get the Gauchos ahead for the first time in the fourth quarter at the 1:13 mark.
San Jose State would regain control of the game when Fieme'a Hafoka pulled up for the go-ahead jumper with 47 seconds left.
UCSB couldn't come up with a response in its next possession, and Hafoka drew a foul and converted on both of her free throws to seal the victory for San Jose State in what was the two teams' first matchup since 1996.
Lane earned a gargantuan 16 rebounds in the loss, representing 37% of the team's boards in the entire game.
Walters scored three points and recorded two rebounds in 10 and a half minutes as she made her Division I debut.
UCSB faces USC at home on Monday night before traveling to Cal Baptist on Saturday, Nov. 23. Monday's matchup will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on BigWest.TV with the "Voice of the Gauchos" Gerry Fall on play-by-play and Louis Reynaud providing color commentary.
