SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior midfielder Lynsee Voss scored a goal in the 85th minute to lift UC Santa Barbara to a 3-2 win over visiting UC Riverside on Friday night at Harder Stadium. The win, coupled with UC Irvine's 3-2 overtime loss at Cal Poly, puts UCSB in the Big West Tournament for the second straight season. The final seeds will be determined on Sunday.
With the win, the Gauchos (8-4-5 overall, 4-1-2 Big West, 14 points) have put themselves will finish among the top-four in league and, depending on the result of their match against UC Irvine on Sunday, they could finish in the top-two.
"I'm obviously happy for the young ladies in our program for earning a spot in the Big West Tournament," said head coach Paul Stumpf. "We played really well against a tough Riverside team. Our possession and attack were really good and, in fact, good enough to overcome a few costly mistakes."
UCSB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Isabella Viana claimed a ball on the left side of the box, drove down the line and launched a shot towards the far side of the goal that eluded Caila Kaio, Riverside's goalkeeper.
The Highlanders (3-13-1, 1-6-0) tied the score in the 33rd minute, when Amanda Roy received a feed from Miah Conde and pushed a shot past Evann Smith, who was playing in goal for the Gauchos, replacing the injured Hanna DeWeese.
Santa Barbara made it 2-1 at the 60:02 mark when freshman Dylan she blasted a long shot from about 30 yards out on the right side and scored unassisted.
Riverside needed less than two minutes to re-tie the score at 1-1 when Karen Ritter took a feed from Conde and dinked a shot past Smith at 61:59 in the second half.
UCSB dominated the final 28 minutes and finally scored the game-winner in the 85th minute. Shaelan Murison cracked a long ball from left-to-right, in front of the goal, that was collected by Viana. Viana, shoved a pass to Lynsee Voss who punched it past Kaio for the game-winner. It was Voss' second goal of the season.
The Gauchos will play their final home game of the year on Sunday, Nov. 3, when they host UC Irvine in a 2:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium. Six UCSB seniors – Sophia Dertorossian, Sophia Villalta, Hanna DeWeese, Lynsee Voss, Shaelan Murison and Katherine Sheehy – will be honored prior to the game.
