Murison Named Big West Offensive Player of the Year, Joined on First Team All-League by Voss, Dertorossian

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara senior forward Shaelan Murison has been the Big West Offensive Player of the Year and she is joined on the All-Big West First Team by senior midfielder Lynsee Voss and senior defender Sophia Dertorossian, the league announced Wednesday.

In addition to Murison, Voss and Dertorossian making first team all-league, senior defender Katherine Sheehy was chosen All-Big West Second Team and Dylan Lewis was named to the All-Freshman Team.

"I'm pretty proud of all that our team has accomplished thus far this season," said head coach Paul Stumpf. "I'm very happy that the coaches in our conference recognize these young ladies for their exceptional performances over the course of our conference schedule."

Murison enters Thursday's Big West Tournament semifinal game against CSUN with a league-leading 17 goals. She also has seven assists and 41 points. Not only does she lead the Big West in goals and points, she ranks third nationally in goals and fourth in points. Her 17 goals are the most by a UCSB player since Jennifer Borcich had the same total in 2002 and they rank tied for ninth in school history. Murison has scored at least one goal in 11 matches, two or more four times and she produced three-goal hat tricks in wins at Loyola Marymount and Hawai'i. She has 17 of the team's 31 total goals, 54.8%, and she has scored or assisted on 24 of the 31, 77.4%. The Santa Clara, Calif., native has been named Big West Offensive Player of the Week four times this season, all in the last six weeks of the season. Finally, Murison is the seventh Gaucho player to earn the Big West Offensive Player of the Year award, joining Borcich (2001, 2003 and 2004), Krystal Sandza (2002), Genelle Ives (2008) and Kailyn Kugler (2009).

Voss has played in and started 14 matches in 2019, missing four league contests due to injury. She has two goals and one assist. A transfer from the University of San Diego, Voss played three seasons at UCSB and this is her first all-league honor.

Dertorossian has been a mainstay of a Gaucho defensive unit that has not allowed more than two goals in any match this season. She has started all 18 matches and has not attempted a shot, although she has played 1,655 minutes, including every minute of every Big West match and every minute of 14 contests overall.

Sheehy made the shift from forward to defender in 2019 and she has been outstanding as well. She has played in and started 17 matches this season and, like Dertorossian, she has been one of the key factors in a UCSB defensive unit that has allowed just 20 goals.

Lewis is tied for third on the team in goals with three and points with eight. She has started 15 of the 16 matches in which she has played, scoring goals in wins over Long Beach State, UC Riverside and Cal State Bakersfield. Lewis ranks second to Murison on the team with 24 shots and 13 shots on goal.

No. 3 seeded UCSB will play No. 2 CSUN in a semifinal match at the Big West Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 7 with kick-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Titan Stadium, the home field of No. 1 seeded Cal State Fullerton, which will play No. 4 seeded Hawai'i in the other semifinal match. The winners will play Sunday, Nov. 10 for the championship and the league's bid to the NCAA Tournament.
