SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sierra Altmeyer's two-run blast wasn't enough for UCSB (21-23) on Wednesday, as Cal (22-17-1) scored five runs in the fifth inning to take the 8-3 decision at Campus Diamond.

Altmeyer's fourth home run of the season came in the second inning as she belted a shot that dropped right in front of the scoreboard in left field. Overall, the freshman went 1-3 in the game with two RBIs and a run.

Stacy Cavazos and Arianna Palomares led the Gauchos with two hits apiece with each going 2-3 in their at bats. Palomares provided UCSB with its third run of the game in the third with an RBI double delivered to right center.

In the circle, Ashley Ludlow (7-12) was credited with the loss after allowing six runs (one earned) off six hits through 4.2 innings. Veronika Gulvin came in midway through the fifth to throw the final 2.1 innings, as Cal scored two runs on her from three hits.

The Bears struck first in the opening frame after a Khala Taylor hit a sac fly to center field to score Jazmyn Jackson with bases loaded. It was the second out of the inning and also the second at bat Cal had with bases loaded. The fly out followed Ludlow's first punch out of the game, as the senior went on to force another fly out to end the inning with the Bears scoring just one run.

With Altmeyer's two-run homer getting the Gauchos on the board for the first time, Palomares made it three unanswered Gaucho runs in the third with her double to right center, scoring Kristen Clark.

UCSB was able to hold on to its two-run lead until the fifth inning when Cal's offense ignited with the help of a throwing error to score five runs. Kobie Pettis's two-RBI double ended Ludlow's day, as Gulvin came in to nab the final out for the Gauchos. But by that point, Cal had taken a 6-3 advantage.

With three more innings of offense to go, UCSB mustered two singles, but were unable to move anyone into scoring position, as Cal tacked on two more runs in the sixth to push the score to what would be the final tally of 8-3.

The Gauchos will be back at Campus Diamond this Saturday to open a three-game series with Long Beach State starting at 1 p.m. Tickets are available at the Ticketing Office in the Intercollegiate Athletics Building, over the phone 805.893.UCSB (8272), or online.
