BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara men's swimming dominates the pool for the second day of the CSUB Roadrunner Invitational Swim Meet. They finish a strong 119.83 points ahead of the second place team Hawaii, a great testament to how the Gauchos see this season going for the men. On the women's side, they finished barely behind a nervous Hawaii only 31.5 points from victory.
Head Coach Matt Macedo stated, "While yesterday was a great start to our season, the team was even better today. I believe the depth of our team is our biggest strength. Of the 22 events contested today, the Gauchos won 10 of them and were second in 6 of the events we didn't win so we had some big swims to go with that depth. Emily Ward, Heaven Quintana and Rachel Forbes led the way for our women while Mason Tittle, Kian Brouwer and Logan Hotchkiss came up big for our men. I'm very pleased with the first competitions of the season and very proud of this team. I hope we can carry this momentum into our meet with Cal Poly next Saturday."
Junior captain Quintana swept both of her individual events today with a time of 2:02.83 in the 200 butterfly and a 2:05.30 in the 200 individual medley. Teammate Madelyn Johnson followed Quintana's lead with a third place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:07.11).
Ward won first in the 100 freestyle (52.21) but was out-touched in the 200 freestyle (1:51.93) by a mere 0.52. Junior Haley Herzberg (1:54.20) and Freshman Kassidy Lemminn (1:54.63) contributed to a third and fourth finish in the 200 freestyle.
Another big scorer from the women's team was Forbes in the distance free events. She placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:02.97) and second in the 1000 freestyle (10:19.01) both swims barely behind Hawaii's Phoebe Hines.
Senior captains Tittle and Hotchkiss led their team by example with another handful of individual wins. Tittle swept the 50 freestyle (20.39) and the 100 freestyle (44.94). He was followed by teammates Riley Ferguson placing third in the 50 free (21.13) and Justin Nguyen picking up second in the 100 free (44.95).
Hotchkiss matched his co-captain by sweeping the 500 freestyle (4:31.91) and the 1000 freestyle (9:30.37). Junior Jake Rollo followed the lead and finished with a second place in the 1000 free (9:43.50).
Newcomers Alec Cullen and Lucca Martins proved themselves by Martins earning a first place in the 200 butterfly (1:51.81) and Cullen securing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.54) for the Gaucho men.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Brouwer, Oscar Jameson, Nguyen, and Tittle took home a first place (3:00.49) while the 400 medley relay team of Ethan Archer, Joe Kmak, Tittle, and Brouwer finished second (3:22.05).
