STOCKTON, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara fell victim
twice to Big West leader Pacific on Friday, falling 3-2 and then
5-1 at the Tiger's Bill Simoni Field. It marks the Gauchos' second
consecutive Big West series loss and drops them to 24-25 on the
season and 8-9 in league games. Pacific improves to 34-16 and 13-4
in the Big West.
The Gauchos will attempt to bounce back against the Tigers on
Saturday as they close the series with a 10 a.m. game at Bill
Simoni Field.
UCSB gained the initial lead in game one at the top of the
second inning when Amanda Ziegler
reached base and then scored on a pair of Tiger errors.
Pacific wouldn't trail for long as Amy Moore tied the game with
a lead off home run to left field at the bottom of the same inning.
The Tigers then took the lead with a bases loaded walk in the
third.
The Gauchos were able to knot the game again in the fifth inning
when Allison
Taylor drove Kathryn Pilpil
home with a base hit up the middle.
Another lead off home run, this time by Kelsey Rodriguez at the
bottom of the sixth, sealed the win for the Tigers.
Junior Krista
Cobb (12-13) suffered the loss after tossing the complete game
and allowing three runs on seven hits. She walked three and struck
out five.
Pilpil led the Gauchos offensively going 3-for-4 with a run. Jessica
Beristianos, meanwhile, posted her 41st career double; she is
now just one shy of tying Mandy Edwards'
school record.
During the nightcap, Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
first inning when they scored on a Gaucho error and an RBI single
from Rodriguez.
The Tigers pushed the lead to three runs in the second when
Nikki Armagost hit a two out RBI single to send home Lindsey
Pierce.
UCSB picked up its lone run of the game at the top of the fourth
inning when a miscue in the outfield led Lauren Boser to
reach scoring position. Beristianos moved her over to third with a
single through the left side before Ziegler sent a base hit up the
middle to push Boser across home plate.
Pacific tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a
bases loaded walk by Rodriguez and an RBI ground out by Alexa
Rivera to bring the final tally to 5-1.
Andriana
Collins (12-12) took the loss after allowing three runs (one
earned) off of six hits in 4.1 innings of work. She walked five.
Cobb closed the game and allowed the final two runs off of one hit
and two walks. She also tallied a pair of strikeouts.
Pilpil continued her solid day at the plate with a 2-for-4
performance and Taylor also tallied two hits in four at-bats.
