Box Score 2 STANFORD, Calif. - UCSB (2-5) came away as the victor in its first extra innings game of the season, defeating Pacific 10-9 in its second game of the Stanford Nike Invitational. Senior left fielder Kristen Clark tied for team-high honors with three hits and two RBIs, the second of which led to senior Jacqueline Hinojosa's game-winning run in the top of the eighth.
In their first game of the day, the Gauchos fell to tournament host Stanford 16-2.
Pacific
Santa Barbara struck first in its rescheduled game against the Tigers, with senior third baseman Emily Brucelas picking up an RBI in the top of the first inning to score junior outfielder Jessica Johnston. Freshman first baseman Alyssa Diaz would make it 2-0 shortly by capitalizing on a Pacific error.
After the Tigers tied it at 2-2 in the second inning, the Gauchos regained the advantage with three runs in the third. Senior Stacy Cavazos, who entered the day without an RBI this season, recorded her second and third RBIs of the day with a double to left center, bringing Hinojosa and Brucelas home to make it 4-2. Cavazos would then make it 5-2 off another Gaucho double, this time coming from Clark.
Pacific would have an answer once again, taking its first lead of the game, 6-5, thanks to a four-run fourth inning.
Continuing the back-and-forth trend of the first four innings, the momentum would swing back to UCSB in the fifth. Hinojosa scored her second run of the game, giving Johnston her sole RBI, tying it up at 6-6. Johnston and Cavazos would then make it 8-6 off a single to right field by Diaz.
The Tigers went on to add another run with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, setting up what would be a thrilling finish.
Sophomore second baseman Sierra Altmeyer extended UCSB's lead to 9-7 with a triple in the top of the seventh, giving Johnston her third run. Needing two runs to extend the game, the Tigers would make it 9-8 on a Gaucho fielding error. Facing two outs, Pacific's Hailey Reed stepped up to hit a clutch double down the left field line, bringing teammate Caitlyn Sung home to tie it at 9-9.
In the top of the eighth, a bunt by Hinojosa put junior Samantha Lujan in prime scoring position on third with just one out on the board. Unfortunately for the Gauchos, Lujan would be tagged out at home on a Cavazos single immediately after.
Now with two outs, Clark would step up to deliver in a big way, knocking a single down the middle to help give Hinojosa the potential game-winning run. Sophomore pitcher Veronika Gulvin (1-2) would then pick up outs on the first three batters she faced, giving the Gauchos their second victory of the season, 10-9.
Clark finished 3-6 with two RBIs. Diaz and Cavazos finished with one hit apiece, but they made their hits count as they both matched Clark with two RBIs. Johnston and Hinojosa both recorded a game-high three runs.
Gulvin earned her first win of the season, tallying five strikeouts in five innings played.
Stanford
The Cardinal didn't waste much time taking down the Gauchos in their first game of the day, as they enjoyed a 16-0 lead by the end of the third inning. The hosts scored 12 runs in the second inning alone, with runs being earned on eight different hits.
UCSB got its first scratch in the top of the fourth, as Cavazos brought Brucelas home with a single to third base. Clark would follow up with a single through the right side, scoring Hinojosa to make it 16-2. That would remain the final score after a scoreless fifth inning, handing UCSB its second five-inning loss this season.
Clark was efficient at the plate once again, going 2-3 for an RBI to increase her career hit total to 244. She needs just 15 more hits to pass Christine Ramos (258 hits, 2006-09) and become UCSB's all-time hits leader.
Provided that weather doesn't cancel tomorrow's action, the Gauchos will play their final game of the weekend against Pacific at 1 p.m.
