UCSB Defeats Nebraska-Omaha, Wins Second Straight in Extra Innings

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. – For the second straight game at the Stanford Nike Invitational, UCSB (3-5) went into extra innings, this time facing Nebraska-Omaha. And, for the second straight game, the Gauchos came away as victors, with freshman first baseman Alyssa Diaz scoring a walk-off run in the bottom of the eighth to give her team the 4-3 win.

Despite being outhit 8-7 by the Mavericks, Santa Barbara managed to turn six of its seven hits into doubles, including the game-winning RBI from sophomore second baseman Sierra Altmeyer. UCSB's only single of the day, which gave freshman Genesis Ramirez her first career RBI, came in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

Altmeyer and Ramirez led the way with two hits and one RBI each. Junior outfielder Jessica Johnston and Diaz added the Gauchos' other two RBIs, while senior left fielder Kristen Clark tallied one hit and one run.

Sophomore pitcher Veronika Gulvin (0-2) earned her second consecutive win after taking over for freshman Felisha Noriega in the fifth inning. UCSB trailed 3-2 prior to the switch, but Gulvin was able to hold Nebraska-Omaha scoreless with two hits over the final three innings. She finished with all three of the Gauchos' strikeouts.

UCSB scratched first in the bottom of the first. Clark opened things up with a double down the left field line, and two batters later, Diaz brought her home with a double to right center, making it 1-0.

The Gauchos would double their lead in the third. After being walked, senior centerfielder Stacy Cavazos made it to second with the only steal of the game for either team. She would make it 2-0 off a Johnson double immediately after.

The top of the fourth saw the Mavericks score all three of their runs, as they tallied four hits to take a 3-2 lead. UCSB managed to escape without further damage being done, picking up the third out with the bases loaded.

Santa Barbara is now 3-0 in a games where it scores first and games where it scores in the first inning.

The Gauchos will look to extend their winning streak when they head to Cathedral City for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic this coming Thursday.
