Gauchos Fall to LIU Brooklyn, Cal in Home Openers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Playing its first two home games of the season on Friday afternoon, UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to LIU Brooklyn, 6-1 and Cal, 11-0.

LIU BROOKLYN
Playing in wet conditions, UCSB (4-11) allowed LIU Brooklyn (10-6) to pull away late, breaking a 1-1 tie with five runs in the fifth inning. The Blackbirds recorded nearly half of their nine total hits in that inning as they pulled away for good.

The Gauchos finished with six hits of their own, the most they've had in their last seven games. Tying a career-high and leading UCSB with her third two-hit game of the year was freshman Tyler Goldstein.

Also tallying a hit was sophomore Rayna Cohen, who provided Santa Barbara with a run as its leadoff batter in the fourth inning. After making her way to third base, Cohen would score on a Teah Thies single. That would unfortunately go down as UCSB's only score of the game.

Pitchers Felisha Noriega (3-3) and Emily Schuttish split time in the circle, tossing three strikeouts each. Also recording a hit were Sammy Fabian, Cohen, Carissa Felix and Maci Fines.

CAL
After putting up seven hits against the Blackbirds, the Gauchos were held to just three in their second afternoon game against Cal (11-7), which ended in an 11-0, five-inning defeat.

Junior Carissa Felix went a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate, registering hits in the second and fifth innings. Fabian provided UCSB's other hit in the fourth.

The Golden Bears were hot out of the gates, scoring all 11 of their runs in the first three innings. They finished with 10 hits to UCSB's three.

NEXT UP
UCSB is scheduled for two more games this weekend, one each on Saturday and Sunday. If weather permits, the Gauchos will get a rematch against Cal tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. and close things out with a Sunday morning meeting with Pacific at 11:00 a.m.
