Gauchos Lose at No. 1 UCLA in Non-Conference Finale

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite nearly matching UCLA in hits and holding the No. 1 ranked Bruins to to just one hit and no runs over the second half of Monday's game at Easton Stadium, the UC Santa Barbara softball team fell 6-0.

The Gauchos close out their non-conference schedule with a 6-25 record, while UCLA improved to 28-1.

After a Maci fines single in the top of the first didn't lead to a run, the Bruins would strike in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single through the left side from Aaliyah Jordan put UCLA up 1-0.

Santa Barbara would again get a runner on base, as Alyssa Lazatin opened the second inning with a leadoff single through the right side. After a trio of strikeouts, UCLA would eventually head to the third without doing anymore damage.

Three different Gauchos would make it on base in the top half of the third, opened up by a Carissa Felix walk. Fines would reach on a fielder's choice soon after, as Felix was thrown out at second for the second out of the inning. Freshman Teah Thies followed with a single of her own to left center, moving Fines into a potential game-tying position at second.

The Bruins would pick up the third out on a groundout quickly after that however, and they pulled away in the bottom of the third, tallying five runs on four hits. Taylor Pack's three-run double put the home side up 5-0 before making it six on a Kinsley Washington single facing two outs.

From there, UCLA would pick up just one hit the rest of the way, as sophomore Emily Schuttish moved into the circle and did a solid job. In 3.1 innings of work, she gave up no walks or runs. Offensively, freshmen Ally Nodohara and Tyler Goldstein would register singles in the fourth and sixth innings, but couldn't turn them into runs.

The Gauchos will be back home for their next six games, starting with their Big West opening series against Cal State Fullerton this Saturday and Sunday.
