UCSB Falls to UC Davis in Series Finale

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Looking for its second straight win over UC Davis on Sunday at Campus Diamond, the UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to the Aggies 9-0.

The Gauchos fall to 7-30 overall and 1-5 in Big West play. UC Davis is now 29-7 overall, 4-2 in conference.

For the second straight game this weekend, UCSB increased its hit total from the previous outing, finishing with eight hits, tied for a conference season-high. Infielders Maci Fines and Kayla Krantz led the way with two hits apiece.

The Aggies went for 11 hits of their own, but did most of their damage in the top of the seventh, when they sealed the win with five runs coming on seven hits.

UCSB had its best chance to score in the bottom of the fifth. Melanie Menor led off with a walk, followed by a single through the left side from Krantz. Sophomore Sammy Fabian then loaded the bases with a single through the right, but the next two Gaucho batters would be retired to end the inning.

Davis had originally taken the lead with a run off two hits in the top of the first. Both teams finished the game with one error. UCSB's error came in a fifth inning which saw the Aggies extend their lead to 4-0 with three more runs.

After six straight at home to open Big West play, the Gauchos will be back on the road for their next six. They head to Hawaii next weekend, opening their first road series at 9:00 p.m. PT on Friday.
