Gauchos Split Games at Third Day of Fresno State Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FRESNO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team's run at the Fresno State Invitational continued with a pair of games on Saturday afternoon at Margie Wright Diamond, resulting in a 5-4 loss to UIC and a 5-2 win against Ohio State.

UIC 5, UCSB 4

Despite the Gauchos' four-run display in the first inning, UIC rallied to top them by a run in UCSB's fourth game of the tournament.

In the first inning, the Gauchos strung together three consecutive two-out scoring plays to take an early 4-0 lead.

With sophomore catcher Ally Nodohara on board after a single and senior first baseman Devan Sperry reaching base after being hit by a pitch, junior centerfielder Rayna Cohen singled in Nodohara to get the first run on the board.

Senior OP Carissa Felix hit a two-run single in the following plate appearance, and then freshman right fielder Sam Denehy singled to score Felix immediately afterward.

A three-run home run from UIC's Alyssa Griman got the Flames within a run in the bottom of the second, and a Kayla Pociejewski RBI single tied things up at 4-4 in the sixth.

In the final frame, UIC's Maddie Spinks walked off the game on an RBI fielder's choice, scoring Kayla Wedl to win the matchup.

UCSB 5, Ohio State 2

Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Molina pitched a four-hit complete game and the Gaucho offense scored three runs to go ahead in the fifth inning to split the weekend's pair of games with Ohio State following last night's 5-1 defeat to the Buckeyes.

A Sperry sac fly with bases loaded led to the opening run as junior left fielder Sammy Fabian came across the plate.

In the fourth inning, an error at shortstop benefitted the Gauchos in Fabian's bases-loaded at-bat, as she reached first and Denehy scored to double the lead.

In the bottom half of the frame, Ohio State's Taylor Pack tied things up with an RBI double, scoring teammates Claire Nicholson and Kaitlyn Coffman.

Then, things unraveled for Ohio State as two-straight wild pitches resulted in both Cohen and Nodohara scoring, both with Sperry working at the plate.

With the count at 3-1, Sperry hit a homer to score the Gauchos' fifth and final run as they won their fifth game of the season.

The Gauchos play their final game of the Fresno State Invitational on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against Pacific. Live stats for the game will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
