Gauchos Blank Utah State, San Jose State to Extend Win Streak to Six

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team (11-13) allowed just six hits in 13 innings against Utah State and San Jose State today to extend their season-long win streak to six games at Spartan Softball Field on Friday afternoon.

UCSB 8, Utah State 0 (6 innings)

The Gauchos run-ruled the Aggies by scoring five runs in the sixth inning, while sophomore pitcher Alyssa Molina delivered yet another fantastic performance in the circle for the Gauchos.

Santa Barbara scored two in the first inning through junior shortstop Maci Fines' two-run single through the right side, in which she scored sophomore catcher Teah Thies and senior first baseman Devan Sperry.

Junior left fielder Sammy Fabian batted in freshman second baseman Nayah Pola in the following inning with a single up the middle, putting UCSB up 3-0.

The scoreboard caught a break until the sixth inning, when two runs scored off a Fabian single and ensuing throwing error by the Utah State centerfielder, getting freshman second baseman Hannah Damore and Fines across the plate to go ahead 5-0.

Junior OP Rayna Cohen followed that up with a single through the 6-4 gap, plating Fabian and senior third baseman Kayla Krantz.

Sophomore right fielder Ally Nodohara recorded the game-ending single in the next at-bat, scoring Rayna Cohen to get the Gauchos their eighth run.

All five runs in the sixth came on two outs.

Molina allowed just three hits, striking out one in her six innings pitched as she nabbed her fourth win of the season.

UCSB 4, San Jose State 0

UCSB dealt San Jose State its fifth loss of the season in 26 games played, shocking the Spartans on their home field off a three-hit gem from senior pitcher Felisha Noriega and run support from Fines, Thies, and Pola.

After Thies led off the second inning with a triple to center, Fines batted her in on a sac fly to left, getting the Gauchos on the board first.

The rest of the scoring came in the fourth. Sperry put herself in scoring position off a leadoff double and advanced to third on a passed ball, and then Thies rewarded her by singling her in up the middle, doubling UCSB's lead to 2-0.

Fines stepped up to the plate next and delivered a double down the left field line to score Thies.

One Tyler Goldstein single later, Nayah Pola grounded out, but earned an RBI in the process as Fines scored the Gauchos' fourth run of the game.

The win went to Noriega, her fourth of the season, after she pitched a complete game shutout.
