Schuttish, Gauchos Wipe Out Hawai'i 7-0 in Lone Saturday Contest

Box Score

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Junior pitcher Emily Schuttish pitched a three-hit complete game shutout and a trio of Gauchos put up two hits and two RBIs as the UC Santa Barbara softball team snapped its six-game losing streak with a 7-0 win against Hawai'i on Saturday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Gauchos scored two in the third inning and five in the fifth to win the game, improving to 4-15 and 1-2 in Big West play in a contest that took all of four hours and 30 minutes to be completed due to three separate rain delays.

Freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally kicked things off by doubling to left center on a 2-1 count and scoring freshman right fielder Sam Denehy, who had reached base on an error.

McNally advanced to third on the next at-bat when freshman third baseman Ashley Donaldson singled, and nearly stole home when Donaldson stole second during the ensuing plate appearance by junior left fielder Sammy Fabian, but she was put out on the throw from the Hawai'i shortstop back to home.

Fabian reached on a base hit and then junior second baseman Maci Fines hit a sac fly to score Donaldson and put UCSB ahead 2-0.

In the fifth inning, McNally again scored Denehy on a single, with Denehy able to take advantage of a throwing error by the left fielder to cross the plate.

Later in the frame, Fabian scored McNally on a groundout to make it 4-0 and then Fines hit an RBI single to right field to bring Donaldson in.

Following a Hawai'i pitching change and several defensive substitutions, a fielder's choice saw sophomore catcher Teah Thies reach first, but Fines was put out at second. In the next at-bat, however, sophomore first baseman Ally Nodohara crushed the Gauchos' first home run of the season to left field and put the exclamation point on the UCSB lead, advancing it to 7-0.

McNally, Donaldson, and Fabian each finished with two hits apiece, while Fines and Nodohara each collected two RBIs.

The second scheduled matchup of the evening was canceled in the top of the fourth inning due to poor field conditions from the rain.

The Gauchos take on UC San Diego in conference action next weekend, with the three currently scheduled matchups taking place on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
