BERKELEY, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to the Cal Golden Bears by one run in a close affair on Saturday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.

Junior pitcher Emily Schuttish pitched six innings, allowing six hits and a run, while walking and striking out three. Freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally went 3-for-4 at the plate on the day, while junior left fielder Sammy Fabian picked up two hits in four at-bats.

The lone run in the contest came in the bottom of the fifth when Sophie Medellin singled to shortstop on a 2-2 count with two outs to score Makena Smith.

The Gauchos had runners in scoring position in three separate innings, but came closest to scoring in the top of the seventh when freshman Korie Thomas, McNally, and Fabian loaded the bases on consecutive singles with two outs. However, reliever Haylei Archer forced a flyout in the following at-bat to end the game and secure the win for the Golden Bears.
