Box Score 2 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to San Diego State 10-0 and 6-2 in its series-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Campus Diamond.
With the losses, the Gauchos drop to 8-20 on the season.
Game one: SDSU 10, UCSB 0 (6 innings)
San Diego State's Shelby Thompson hit both a home run and a grand slam for the Aztecs in the series opener as the visitors run-ruled the Gauchos.
The Aztecs scored three runs in the first inning through an Alexa Schultz single, Jillian Celis double, and a Jewel Perez groundout.
In the second, Riley Thies added a fourth run onto the board by stealing home.
The scoring slowed down until the fifth inning, when Thompson hit her first of two home runs, the first of which cleared the fence in left field.
San Diego State extended its lead to 6-0 in the sixth when Thies was walked with the bases loaded.
Then, Thompson cleared the bases with a grand slam to center field, tacking on four runs and making it 10-0.
The game ended after the bottom of the sixth due to the run rule.
Game two: SDSU 6, UCSB 2
The Aztecs' offensive firepower continued to be on display in the second game of the afternoon.
SDSU scored a run in each of the second, third, fifth, and sixth innings, including solo home runs by Celis and Thompson in the latter two frames.
UCSB put a pair of runs on in the sixth, with junior left fielder Sammy Fabian reaching first on an error and freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally scoring on the throw.
Then, junior first baseman Rayna Cohen singled through the right side to score Donaldson to cut the deficit to two runs.
However, the Aztecs were able to close out the win with two runs in the seventh after Makena Brocki scored Jessica Cordola in on a fielder's choice and an Alyssa Pinto bunt brought in Celis to cap off the scoring.
The Gauchos close out the series and the non-conference portion of their season tomorrow at noon with game three against the Aztecs. The game will be streamed live on BigWest.TV and live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
