Box Score 2 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team was defeated by Long Beach State in both games of a Saturday doubleheader, falling 8-2 and 5-4.
Game one: Long Beach State 8, UCSB 2
Long Beach State crafted a 5-0 lead after four innings and added three runs in the sixth to take the first game of the day and claim the series win.
The Beach scored a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings before an Alysa Gonzalez RBI single made it 5-0 in the fourth.
The Gauchos got on the board in the fifth inning when freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally singled to right and scored freshman DP Korie Thomas, who had reached base on a single of her own earlier in the inning.
Long Beach State's Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the following inning to give the visitors their largest lead of the game at 8-1.
UCSB freshman third baseman Ashley Donaldson brought in freshman Lauren Lewis in the bottom half of the sixth for what stood as the final run of the game.
Game two: Long Beach State 5, UCSB 4
The Gauchos were on the verge of upsetting the Beach in the final Big West-countable game of the weekend, but a last gasp home run by the Beach's Suzy Brookshire in the top of the seventh tied the game at 4-4 and a Cam Cecil RBI single broke the tie to give Long Beach State the doubleheader sweep.
The scoring didn't begin until the top of the fifth when Long Beach State's Alyssa Gonzalez singled to right field to plate Naomi Hernandez and Lilyanna Martinez.
The Gauchos managed to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning on singles by junior first baseman Rayna Cohen and sophomore center fielder Tyler Goldstein and a walk by sophomore right fielder Ally Nodohara, setting up Thomas for a bases-clearing triple to give the Gauchos their first lead of the series.
Later in the inning, a Long Beach State fielding error made it 4-2 as Thomas came across the plate.
In the seventh, the Beach were on the ropes with two outs and a full count on Brookshire, but she came through with a two-run blast to center field to tie the game up at 4-4.
Back-to-back-to-back Long Beach State singles followed the homer, the third of which was Cam Cecil's base hit that scored Breezy Wise and ultimately stood at the game-winner.
The Gauchos and Beach complete their four-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on BigWest.TV and live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
