FULLERTON, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara softball team dropped both games in its doubleheader with Cal State Fullerton, losing 9-2 and 9-1 to the Titans on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Family Field.
With the losses, the Gauchos fall to 8-28 and 5-10 in conference play on the season.
Game one: Cal State Fullerton 9, UCSB 2
UCSB got out to a hot start, picking up a pair of runs in the top of the first, but it was all Fullerton from then on as the Titans scored all nine runs in the first four innings and cruised to their second win of the series.
UCSB freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally led off with a left-field double, and a single by junior second baseman Maci Fines in the next at-bat brought her in for the first run of the game.
After a pair of groundouts, sophomore catcher Teah Thies scored Fines on a double to put the Gauchos up 2-0.
However, Fullerton stole the thunder in the bottom of the inning. The Titans' Megan Delgadillo reached base on a single and Kelsie Whitmore earned a walk to start off the frame, and Hannah Becerra cashed in with a three-run home run to right center to take the early lead.
The Titans piled on four runs to their lead in the second inning through a Gaucho error, a two-RBI single from Irie Siofele, and an RBI single by Julia Valenzuela.
The hosts managed to tack on a run in each of the third and fourth innings through a Whitmore RBI single and a Daisy Munoz solo homer, respectively, to complete the 9-2 win.
Game two: Cal State Fullerton 9, UCSB 1 (5 innings)
Cal State Fullerton held UCSB to just four hits in the second game of the doubleheader, completing the conference-countable series sweep by defeating the Gauchos via the run-rule.
The Titans' Whitmore got things started with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the first, and Evelyn Sablan doubled the scoreline with an RBI single in the second inning.
The Gauchos cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single to left center by sophomore right fielder Ally Nodohara, but Fullerton scored five runs in the fourth inning to strengthen its grip on the game.
Delgadillo brought in two runs on a double and both Whitmore and Becerra hit home runs, the former being a two-run shot, for the Big West leaders to take a 7-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Peyton Toto ended the game on a two-run walk-off home run.
The Gauchos complete the series with a non-conference matchup tomorrow afternoon, with the action beginning at 12:00 p.m. A live stream and live stats will be available on BigWest.TV and UCSBGauchos.com, respectively.
