FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite allowing just three hits on the day, the UC Santa Barbara softball team was shut out in its series finale against Cal State Fullerton as a pair of Titan home runs led them to a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Family Field.
With the loss, the Gauchos are now 8-29 on the season. The game did not count towards either team's Big West Conference record.
UCSB freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally and junior second baseman Maci Fines opened the top of the first with back-to-back singles, but were left stranded after three quick outs from the Fullerton defense.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Titans' Alyssa Hernandez hit a one-out home run to left field to put the hosts up 1-0.
In the fourth, Fullerton extended its lead to 3-0 on a Kika Ramirez two-run home run.
The Gauchos wouldn't pick up their next hit until the sixth inning, when they got the bases loaded with two outs on a walk drawn by freshman Nayah Pola, a Fines single, and junior first baseman Rayna Cohen getting hit by a pitch. However, all three were left on base following a flyout in foul territory along the third base line.
UCSB had one last chance to rally in the seventh inning with two outs on the board, as freshman third baseman Korie Thomas earned a walk before sophomore centerfielder Tyler Goldstein doubled to right. Unfortunately, Alexia Silvas forced a groundout for Fullerton and the Titans completed the four-game series sweep.
The Gauchos return home to Campus Diamond to take on UC Davis next weekend. Games are scheduled for Friday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m. All games will be livestreamed on BigWest.TV and live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
