Gauchos Hold Aggies to Four Runs in Friday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara softball team snapped its 11-game losing streak with a pair of victories over Big West conference rivals UC Davis in a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Campus Diamond.

Following the victories, the Gauchos improve to 10-29 on the season with a 7-10 record in conference play.

Game one: UCSB 2, UC Davis 1

The Gauchos came out on top in a closely contested first matchup of the series thanks to a shutdown performance by junior pitcher Emily Schuttish.

UC Davis went ahead in the third inning on a double steal, when Isabella Leon stole second and Libbie McMahan stole home.

The eventual game-winning at-bat occurred two innings later, when junior left fielder Sammy Fabian hit a triple deep into right field, scoring both freshman DP Korie Thomas and sophomore catcher Teah Thies.

Schuttish struck out eight and allowed just three hits and issued two walks in a complete game, earning her first win since her April 3 victory against Cal Poly.

Game two: UCSB 11, UC Davis 3 (6 innings)

UCSB picked up its first run-rule victory of the season as the Gaucho bats came alive in the second game of the day.

The Aggies scored a pair of runs to kick off the game, but the hosts quickly matched that with an RBI groundout from junior first baseman Rayna Cohen and an RBI single from freshman third baseman Ashley Donaldson in the bottom of the first.

Neither team would score again until the Gauchos did for three consecutive innings in the third, fourth, and fifth frames.

In the third, UCSB employed a double steal of its own as freshman shortstop Madelyn McNally stole home while junior second baseman Maci Fines stole second.

The Gauchos made it 4-2 in the fourth inning after an error at first base allowed Thies to come across the plate.

Three runs were added to the blue and gold's tally in the fifth inning on a Fines triple, Cohen double, and Donaldson single, putting the Gauchos up by five.

Davis' Sarah Starks pulled back a run on a homer in the sixth, but the Gauchos closed the game out on back-to-back RBI singles by Fabian and McNally, and then a game-ending two-RBI triple by Cohen to deep right center field earning the Gauchos a walk-off run-rule victory.

The top five batters in the order - Fabian, McNally, Fines, Cohen, and Donaldson each recorded multiple hits, with McNally adding to her Big West-leading tally with three.

Cohen's four RBIs matched her season-high from March 26 at UC San Diego.

Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Molina won her first game of the season, putting together a two-hit performance in five innings while striking out two.

The Gauchos wrap up their three-game series with UC Davis tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. A live stream will be available on BigWest.TV and live stats will be hosted on UCSBGauchos.com.
