SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Following a pair of wins on Friday afternoon that gave it its first series win since April 4, the UC Santa Barbara softball team dropped its final game of its series against UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at Campus Diamond, falling 5-2 to the Aggies.
UCSB led 2-1 after the fourth inning, but UC Davis came back with four runs in the sixth to claim victory and avoid the sweep. With the loss, the Gauchos are now 10-30 on the season with a 7-11 mark in Big West play.
The Gauchos went ahead in the bottom of the first when junior second baseman Maci Fines hit a sac fly to score junior left fielder Sammy Fabian.
UC Davis' Bella Pahulu tied the game up in the next inning, singling in Marissa Jauregui on a 2-2 count with one out.
UCSB pulled back in front in the bottom of the fourth, when sophomore catcher Teah Thies hit a sac fly of her own to score Fines.
The Aggies set up their comeback in the top of the sixth when Anna Dethlefson and Sommer Kisling reached on errors, setting up back-to-back RBI singles by Sarah Starks and Jauregui to go on top for the first time in the game, 3-2.
Pahulu loaded the bases in the next at-bat and then Leah Polson tacked on the final two runs of the game with an RBI double to left field.
UC Davis pitcher Kenedi Brown managed to retire the Gauchos in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory for the visitors.
Fabian led UCSB on the day with two hits, including her third triple of the season, while McNally, freshman third baseman Ashley Donaldson, and sophomore right fielder Ally Nodohara each recorded one.
The Gauchos take to the field for the final home series of the 2021 season next weekend against UC Riverside. The series opens with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8 beginning at 1:00 p.m., and concludes with a single game on Sunday, May 9. A ceremony honoring the team's graduating seniors will take place on Sunday.
