Box Score 2 SANTA BARBARA, Calif (Saturday, April 1) – With a doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly, the UC Santa Barbara softball team is now two games over .500 in Big West Play. The Gauchos won 8-4 and 8-2 in their two games today.
GAME ONE: GAUCHOS 8, MUSTANGS 4
The Gauchos got out to a hot start scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning off an Alexa Sams triple to left center. UCSB added three more runs in the fourth after Daryn Siegel got hit by a pitch to bring in a run. Following that Sams brought in two more runs on a two-RBI single.
The Mustangs posed no threat through the first four innings of play. In the fifth they would score two, but UC Santa Barbara quickly answered after Siegel brought in two runs on a single down the left field line. A Jazzy Santos single up the middle brought in another run as UCSB took complete control of the game.
Cal Poly scored two in the top of the seventh to cut into the deficit but that is all they would get as UC Santa Barbara won game one 8-4.
GAME TWO: GAUCHOS 8, MUSTANGS 2
A tightly contested ballgame for the first three innings saw UCSB pull away in the fourth as they scored six runs to take a seven-run lead.
For the fourth time in their last five games the Gauchos plated a run in the first inning. A Daryn Siegel groundout brought in a run. Cal Poly tied the game up in the third, but it did not last long. In the bottom of the third UCSB plated another run to take a 2-1 lead.
The Gauchos took complete control of the game in the fourth inning after scoring six runs on five hits and taking advantage of one Cal Poly error. UCSB did not allow the Mustangs to get anything going on offense as Malaya Johsnon and the Gaucho defense allowed just two runs, winning the game 8-2.
