Gauchos Triumph over CBU but Fall to the UC Davis Aggies

MALIBU, CALIF.: Following an exhilarating double dual meet against the California Baptist Lancers and the UC Davis Aggies, the UC Santa Barbara men's and women's teams secured a triumph over CBU, while the women's team faced a setback against the UC Davis Aggies. The conclusive scores for the men's team stood at 173 for Santa Barbara and 88 for CBU. On the women's front, the final scores were showed a Davis victory against Santa barbara, with Davis earning 143 and Santa Barbara 119. As for the women's scores against the Lancers, the final tally came out to 179 Santa Barbara and 82 California Baptist. 

Women's Top Tier Moments:

Throughout the afternoon, the women's team showcased an impressive display of skill, securing multiple first-place victories for the Gauchos in their respective events. Samantha Banos set the tone by claiming gold in both the 200-yard freestyle, concluding with an outstanding time of 1:52.44, and the 200-yard butterfly, where she showcased her expertise with a final time of 2:01.87. The sophomore standout, Hazel Derr, dominated the 100-yard backstroke with a swift time of 56.69 and continued her success in the 200-yard backstroke, achieving a noteworthy time of 2:03.51. Additionally, both sophomore Ashley Ray and freshman Makenna Leacox delivered golden performances. Ray secured first place in the 100-yard backstroke, crossing the finish line at 1:04.11, while Leacox triumphed in the 100-yard butterfly with an impressive time of 55.87.

In the Women's relays, the 200-yard medley relay team, composed of Hazel Derr, Ashley Ray, Makenna Leacox, and Hannah Joseph, clinched first place, concluding with an impressive time of 1:44.21.

Men's First Place Victories:

As for the men's team, multiple athletes secured top-tier finishes, demonstrating excellence throughout the afternoon. Junior Matt Driscoll kicked off the pace with a remarkable victory in the 50-yard freestyle, completing the sprint in a swift 20.85 seconds. He also earned first place in the 100 backstroke, finishing the race in an impressive 50.32 final time. Standout Austin Sparrow showcased his prowess in the 100-yard freestyle, claiming first place with a rapid time of 44.82, and continued his success in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing at an impressive 1:39.01. Freshman Jack Nugent excelled in the 200-yard backstroke, earning the top spot with an impressive time of 1:51.38. Senior Corban McIntosh displayed dominance in the 100-yard breaststroke, securing first place with a strong time of 55.70, and continued his success in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing at 2:04.15. Kyle Brill showcased his versatility in the 200-yard individual medley, claiming first place with a commendable time of 1:51.30.

In terms of relay wins, the Gaucho men took home first place in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay. The 200-yard freestyle relay team, composed of Austin Sparrow, Henry Adamson, Zachary Tamusaitis, and Bryden Thielenhaus, delivered an electrifying performance, touching the wall with precision at an exhilarating 1:23.16. Meanwhile, in the 200-yard medley relay, a team made up of William Cussimanio, Corban McIntosh, Bryden Thielenhaus, and Rob Carpenter outpaced their competition with a final time of 1:23.16.
