SAN DIEGO - The UC Santa Barbara Softball team took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on and fell 4-3 to the Minnesota in their first game of the day on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Gauchos looked to bounce back under the lights against San Diego State but the Aztec offense was too much for the Gauchos.
GAME ONE: GAUCHOS 3, GOPHERS 4
The Gauchos got on the scoreboard first pushing across two runs in the third inning. Back-to-back fielder's choices pushed the runs across with Madelyn McNally and Erin Mendoza scoring.
The Gauchos built on their lead in the fifth inning when Ashley Donaldson singled through the right side, scoring Lucy Morgan. The Gophers scored four runs over the final three innings of play to ultimately win the game. A one-out single with runners on second and third walked the game off for Minnesota.
Sophomore Malaya Johnson started the ballgame and went 5.2 innings, surrendering two runs, one earned, on seven hits, walking none and striking out three.
Offensively, the Gauchos were led by senior Ashley Donaldson, who went 1-for-3 on the day with two RBI. Ainsley Waddell put together another great game at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
GAME TWO: GAUCHOS 1, AZTECS 6
After San Diego State pushed a run across in the top of the first to take an early lead, the Gauchos put a run on the board with an RBI single from Elicia Acosta. From that point forward though, it was all Aztecs.
San Diego State then scored five times over the remaining six innings to break the tie and grab the 6-1 win. The Gauchos were able to get traffic on the base paths but timely hitting was not on their side as they were unable to close the gap.
Offensively, the Gauchos were paced by junior Elicia Acosta, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and an RBI. Senior Madelyn McNally put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a double.
