LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UC Santa Barbara Softball team earned a split on the opening Day of the UNLV Desert Classic. Senior Camryn Snyder and freshman Emily McCoskey combined to toss a shutout against the Bradley Braves as the UCSB Gauchos blanked the Bradley Braves 5-0. In game two, the Gauchos dropped a close 3-2 game against Iowa State. Jazzy Santos and Ainsley Waddell combined for five of the eight Gaucho hits in the contest.
GAME ONE: GAUCHOS 5, BRAVES 0
The Gauchos took an early lead in the first inning, scoring on a two-run home run by Elicia Acosta with senior Madelyn McNally aboard.
The Gauchos then tacked on runs in the sixth inning when they scored three times. Two of those three runs scored on a two-run single off the bat of Ainsley Waddell.
Snyder (1-2) started and picked up the win for UC Santa Barbara. The senior threw 5.1 shutout innings while giving up four hits and striking out seven. Emily McCoskey was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit and striking out two.
In the batter's box, the Gauchos were led by junior Elicia Acosta, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Jazzy Santos put together a standout performance as well, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Freshman Ainsley Waddell also helped out putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI.
GAME TWO: GAUCHOS 2, CYCLONES 3
The Gauchos got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Santa Barbara got an RBI single from Erin Mendoza, scoring freshman Emily Carr from third base.
The Gauchos lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 3-1. UC Santa Barbara scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Waddell, which tightened the Cyclones lead to 3-2. The Gauchos were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
Waddell (0-3) got the ball to start for the Gauchos and took the loss. The southpaw went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits and striking out seven.
In addition to her three hits, Waddell had a double and an RBI to lead the Gauchos. Junior Erin Mendoza compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Jazzy Santos also contributed putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
GAME NOTES
- In game one Snyder and McCoskey combined to throw a four-hit shutout.
- Jazzy Santos was swinging the bat well all day long as she compiled five hits on the day.
- Both Snyder and Waddell struck out seven hitters in their respective starts.
- UCSB went 5-for-12 (.417) with runners in scoring position in game one against Bradley.
- The Gauchos out-hit both the Braves and Cyclones on the day.
