Late Inning Runs Haunt Gauchos in Loss to Michigan

SANTA BARBARA, Calif - The UC Santa Barbara Softball team hung with Big Ten power Michigan for most of the game, staying within one or two runs of the Wolverines. A three-run home run in the top of the seventh pushed the Michigan lead to five, which they ultimately won by in a 6-1 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a quick first inning of work by Ainsley Waddell the Gauchos carried that early momentum over into their at-bats. Madelyn McNally and Jazzy Santos both got aboard with back-to-back singles and later in the inning, McNally would come around to open up the scoring on an RBI ground out by Ashley Donaldson.

The Gaucho lead wouldn't last long as Michigan plated two in their half of the second. Santa Barbara and the Wolverines both were held scoreless for the next two innings. In the bottom of the fourth, UC Santa Barbara looked to get back in the run column with runners at second and third with no outs. Unfortunately, the Gauchos would leave both runners stranded and could not inch closer.

The Wolverines took full advantage of the missed Gaucho opportunity and extended their lead by one in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. After a scoreless sixth inning, UC Santa Barbara looked to keep the game as is, but Michigan added three runs on a three-run home run to build their lead to five. The Gauchos got two base runners aboard in the bottom of the seventh but could not bring them around and feel 6-1 in their final game of the weekend.

In the batter's box, the Gauchos were led by Santos, who went 1-for-2 on the day with two walks. Senior Madelyn McNally compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3. Freshman Tehya Banks also chipped in for the Gauchos, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.

GAME NOTES

  • McNally has hit safely in all but one game so far this season.
  • Waddell threw her second consecutive complete game and has now recorded six or more strikeouts in her last three starts.
  • Waddell has also allowed three or fewer earned runs in all but one of her starts.
