SANTA BARBARA, Calif - After trailing by five runs through the first three innings, the UC Santa Barbara used a nine-run fourth inning and two-run fifth inning to top Hawai'i in their Big West opener.
FROM HEAD COACH JO EVANS
"I am really pleased with the way our team fought back after getting ourselves in a big hole early on," said Evans. "Offensively this was our best day at the plate and just did a good job knowing the zone and our power numbers showed up today. We have seen that in practice with our hitters and seeing them cash in on their hard work is gratifying. Emily (McCoskey) went out there and gave us some solid innings and Camryn (Snyder) came in to close the game, that was huge."
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a rocky start, the Gauchos found themselves trailing 5-0 after three innings with zero hits on the board. In the bottom of the fourth, everything changed as the Gauchos poured on nine runs on 10 hits to take a 9-5 lead. Home runs by Jazzy Santos, Ashley Donaldson and Emily Carr produced seven of the nine runs for the Gauchos in the innings. Back-to-back singles by Ainsley Waddell and Elicia Acosta plated the final two runs of the inning.
The Rainbow Wahine failed to push any runs across before the Gauchos offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Senior Alana Snow's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where UC Santa Barbara scored twice, which brought the Gauchos lead to 11-5.
Hawai'i got four runs back in the top of the sixth inning but did not pull any closer for the remainder of the game. Senior Camryn Snyder came in and pitched the final 1.1 innings to secure the Gauchos victory.
Freshman Emily McCoskey (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen for UC Santa Barbara. The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up six runs and striking out five.
Senior Madelyn McNally led the hit barrage for the Gauchos, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a double. Senior Ashley Donaldson put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and three RBI.
