Swalve, Havens Dominate Throws at Big West Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Big West Championships kicked off this weekend with the multis events, and UC Santa Barbara had a successful showing. Jessica Swalve and Jeramiah Havens competed in the Heptathlon and Decathlon, respectively, and put up outstanding performances.  

Swalve placed fourth out of 15 competitors in the Heptathlon with a total of 5092 points. She won both throwing events, the Javelin and Shot Put, with distances of 39.67m and 12.75m that set her in the top finishers for the Heptathlon. 

Havens earned fourth out of nine in the Decathlon, with a score of 7135 and first places in both the Javelin and Discus. His throws of 56.64m and 44.60m earned him the top spot in the events, and he threw the discus 5.45m or almost 18 ft further than second place. 

Havens set new personal records in multiple events: Shot Put (12.90m), the 400m Dash (50.20), Discus (44.60m), Pole Vault (4.51m), Javelin (56.64m), and 1500m (4:49.61).

UC Santa Barbara will return to the Big West Championships on March 10 and 11 when the remainder of events will compete in San Luis Obispo.
