FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Softball team (14-13, 3-2 Big West) clinched their first series win against Cal State Fullerton after winning both games of the doubleheader today. After a strong first inning the Gacuhos didn't score again until the sixth, but defense and pitching held true for the Gauchos. In game two, the Blue and Gold came back down three to win in extras.
GAME ONE: GAUCHOS 7, TITANS 3
UC Santa Barbara opened the scoring in the first inning with a strong offensive showing. Jazzy Santos drew a walk and eventually scored on a single by Bella Fuentes. Emily Carr followed with a double down the left field line, driving in two more runs to give UC Santa Barbara an early 3-0 lead. The Titans responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, narrowing the gap to 3-2.
The game remained tight until the sixth inning when UC Santa Barbara broke through again. Makayla Newsom scored on a pinch-hit double by Daryn Siegel. Alexa Sams then delivered a crucial double to left center, bringing in two more runs to extend the lead to 6-3. CSUF was unable to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the inning.
In the final inning, UC Santa Barbara added an insurance run. Giselle Mejia doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a groundout, extending the lead to 7-3. The Gauchos' defense held strong in the bottom of the seventh, securing the victory with a final score of 7-3.
GAME TWO: GAUCHOS 11, TITANS 9
UC Santa Barbara opened the game by capitalizing on an early throwing error, with Jazzy Santos scoring an unearned run. Ainsley Waddell and Giselle Mejia's efforts helped load the bases, and Bella Fuentes delivered a single, bringing Waddell home and giving Santa Barbara a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Titans responded in their half, tying the game at 2-2 after a wild pitch and a sequence of plays allowed two runs to score.
In the fifth inning, the Gauchos broke a scoreless stretch with a strong offensive showing. Santos hit a solo homer to left field, and Fuentes and Carr each contributed with RBI singles, bringing the score to 5-4 in favor of UC Santa Barbara. The sixth inning saw Santa Barbara extend their lead further. Mejia hit a crucial double that brought Santos home, followed by Fuentes' three-run home run, pushing the Gauchos lead to 9-6.
UC Santa Barbara added two more runs in the eighth inning. Tehya Banks hit a two-run homer, scoring Katie Terrazas who came in to pinch run and extended the lead to 11-9. CSUF's attempts to rally in the late innings were held in check, with Santa Barbara's defense securing the win.
