Gauchos Track & Field Dominates Final Home Meet At UC Santa Barbara Invite

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Men's and Women's Track & Field team competed in their last home meet of the season at the UC Santa Barbara Invite at the Pauley Track. Throughout the two-day, Gaucho-hosted event, many athletes showcased their talents and impressed in a plethora of competitions in the field and on the track.

FIELD

The women's pole vault saw the Maya Khoury and Sahara Khoury take second and third with jumps of 3.55m. Eitan Goore stole the show on the men's side with a leap of 5.25m to take first overall.

The triple jump saw Kennedy Johnson place second with a mark of 12.25m for the women while Will Denning took first by a landslide with a jump of 15.21m.

The discus was all Anthony Gash, as he threw for a distance of 54.16m to take first overall.

TRACK

The 1500m saw Maya Lacamp, Sophia Gutierrez, and Danielle Hollander sweep the podium with times of 4:35.98, 4:41.60, and 4:43.39, respectively. The men saw Parker Simmons and Manny Correia take the top two spots, timing in at 3:52.04 and 3:54.90, repsectively. KC Barber also notched a sub-4 minute time on the day to take fourth.

In the 4x100m relay, the women took second with a collective time of 46.89 while the men placed first at 40.32.

The 100m hurdles and 110m hurdles were dominated by the Gauchos, as the men took the top six spots in the 110m hurdles, led by Miles Paris (14.09), Sedwitz Dumont (14.44), and Pyrce Edwards (14.48). Nyenuchi Okemgbo and Alison Tjoe took first and second in the 100m hurdles, where Okemgbo went sub-14 seconds and Tjoe got 14.39. Both athletes also matched their placements in the 400m hurdles, as Okemgbo nearly went sub-1 minute with a time of 1:00.43 and Tjoe made her way to the finish at 1:01.68.

Finn Andrews and Julian Singell took first and second in the 400m hurdles as well on the men's side, clocking in at 52.47 and 54.56, respectively.

Mia Shepard continued her success in the 400m, as she took first with a time of 53.52 on the women's side. She also took first in the 200m with a time of 24.26, where Sophia Pardo was right behind in second at 24.64.

The 100m prelim saw Matthew Staples lead the pack with a time of 10.52 to take first and Justin Steele move on to the finals, where they both took podium spots at second and third in the finals. Staples matched his first time of 10.52 while Steele improved to 10.58. Staples continued to burst onto the scene with another impressive showing in the 200m dash, where he placed first, clocking in at 21.86.

The 800m witnessed Dylan Manning and Barber snatch first and second place overall, coming across the finish line with times of 1:54.96 and 1:55.66, in that order. Lacamp and Mia Ziblatt took second and third, where Lacamp finished with a time of 2:15.10 and Ziblatt crossed at 2:20.78.

Santa Barbara took second in the women's 4x400m (3:54.50) while the men placed third with a time of 3:19.15.

Ryann Strawn beat out the competition in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:09.20. The men took the top three spots in the 5000m race as well, as Hayden Owen, Parker Herbert, and Matthew Galindo led the pack. Owen ran for a time of 14:51.10, while Herbert secured 15:10.92 and Galindo finished with 15:13.53.

UP NEXT

The Gauchos look forward to taking part in their last regular-season meet of the year at Vince O'Boyle Classic in Irvine, Calif. On May 2-3. UC Santa Barbara will then look ahead to the postseason.
