Eighteen members of the UC Santa Barbara Baseball team are spending their summers plying their trade on diamonds across the country, with 17 Gauchos playing in wood-bat summer ball leagues while
Jackson Flora takes part in USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team program.
Â
Two Gauchos —
Frank Camarillo and
AJ Krodel — are playing for the hometown Santa Barbara Foresters this summer, with Camarillo, pitcher of the year for the Foresters in 2024, off to a flying start. On opening day, he was part of a combined two-hit shutout, and he logged an immaculate inning on Jun. 22. Also in the California Collegiate League is
Raymond Olivas, pitching for the Walnut Creek Crawdads.
Â
Five more Gauchos are playing in the West Coast League, which spans Washington, Oregon and western Canada.
Hudson Aber and
Liam Barrett are teammates on the Cowlitz Black Bears, with Barrett homering for the Black Bears in their series finale against the Corvallis Knights, a team with two Gauchos of their own.
Ian Fernandez and
Van Froling are both in Corvallis this summer, with Fernandez homering on his Knights debut to kick off what was a sweep of the Black Bears over the weekend. Aber and Barrett's Black Bears face another of their teammates in
Stunner Gonzalez and the Ridgefield Raptors next.
Â
An additional five Gauchos are in action in the Midwest's Northwoods League.
Rowan Kelly  and
Nate Vargas are both Duluth Huskies, who currently sit just two games out of first place in their division.
Corey Nunez and
Nic Peterson are teammates for the Mankato Moondogs, with Nunez collecting Player of the Game honors on July1.
Cole Kosciusko is also in the Northwoods League with the Madison Mallards, where he is hitting .391.
Â
Finally, four Gauchos are headed all the way across the country to play in the prestigious Cape Cod League.
Reed Moring, who got a taste of the Cape last year, is back in Massachusetts for a second summer, playing with the Cotuit Kettleers.
Cole Tryba and
Jonathan Mendez are teammates for the Orleans Firebirds, with Tryba earning CodBall Pitcher of the Day honors on Jun. 29 after getting all five outs by way of the K in a 1 2/3 inning appearance.
Xavier Esquer is set to join Moring, Tryba and Mendez on the Cape later this summer.
