SAN JOSE, Calif. — The UC Santa Barbara softball team fell to the Utah for the second week in a row, 8-4 on Sunday to close the Silicon Valley Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCSB scored four runs on 11 hits, including a triple, but the Utes surged ahead with five runs in the sixth inning and added three more in the seventh.
The Gauchos opened the scoring in the second inning when
Emily Carr reached on an error and scored on a triple by Delaina Maae, giving the team an early lead.
In the fourth inning, Santa Barbara extended its lead with a productive series of hits.
Giselle Mejia and
Bella Fuentes each singled, and Carr followed with another single to load the bases.
Dani Rauscher then delivered an RBI single, scoring Fuentes.
Tehya Banks added another RBI single, bringing Carr home and the Gauchos led 3-0.
UC Santa Barbara added another run in the sixth inning when
Kaylin Garcia, pinch-running for Carr, scored on a fielder's choice hit by Banks to further extend the UCSB lead to 4-0.
However, the Utes mounted a significant comeback in the top of the sixth inning, scoring five runs with the help of a two-RBI triple and other timely hits. Utah took a 5-4 lead.
In the final inning, the Utes secured the win by adding three more runs, capitalizing on a mix of hits and an error as they defeated the Gauchos 8-4.

The Gauchos will travel to Phoenix, Arizona next weekend to compete in the Purple Classic hosted by Grand Canyon. The Gauchos will compete in two games on Friday and Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday.
