Gauchos go Toe-to-Toe with Top Mid-Major Programs

PHOENIX — The UC Santa Barbara softball team battled with two of the top mid-major programs in the country, North Florida and Grand Canyon. Both teams have been receiving votes in the NFCA/GoRout Top 25 Coaches Poll and the Gauchos went toe-to-toe with both.

GAME ONE: OSPREYS 4, GAUCHOS 3
In their first game against North Florida, UC Santa Barbara found themselves in a close contest, ultimately losing 4-3. The Ospreys took an early lead in the first inning after a double to right center scored one for UNF.

UC Santa Barbara responded in the third with a solo home run from Tehya Banks, but the Ospreys extended their lead with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 3-1.

The Gauchos tied the game in the fifth when Banks hit a double and scored on a single by Jaelyn Toledo, who also brought Jazzy Santos home. However, North Florida regained the lead in the sixth with an unearned run on a single, sealing the victory at 4-3.

GAME TWO: LOPES 10, GAUCHOS 6
In the Gauchos' next game against Grand Canyon, UC Santa Barbara scored all six of its runs in a dramatic third inning. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run from Ainsley Waddell. However, the Gauchos could not overcome an early deficit. Grand Canyon took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a walk, followed by a fielder's choice.

The Lopes extended their lead in the second inning with a two-run home run, and additional runs scored due to a fielding error and a double, making the score 7-0 by the end of the inning.

UC Santa Barbara rallied in the third inning, loading the bases with singles from Giselle Mejia, Dani Rauscher, and Tehya Banks. Jazzy Santos drove in two runs with a single, and Jaelyn Toledo followed with an RBI single. Waddell then pulled the Gauchos within one with her three-run homer.

After a scoreless fourth, Grand Canyon extended the lead in the fifth due to another fielding error that allowed two runs to score. They added an insurance run in the sixth with a single, finalizing the score at 10-6.
