IRVINE, Calif. – Following the first week of Big West competition, freshman pitcher
Sophia Clark earned her first weekly award, being named The Big West Freshman of the Week. Clark picked up two wins in the circle enroute to helping the Gauchos sweep UC San Diego.
Clark threw a complete game in her first Big West start. After allowing two solo home runs in the second inning, Clark settled in and did not allow another Triton to score, helping the Gauchos to a 9-2 victory. Over her 7.0 innings of work, she recorded three strikeouts and allowed just six hits.
The San Diego native then came in relief during Sunday's contest. She entered with the bases loaded with one out and the game tied. Clark would get two pop-ups to infielders to get out of the inning unscathed. She then set the Tritons down in order in the seventh, keeping the game level, before
Emily Carr hit a walk-off three-run home run to complete the Gauchos sweep of the Tritons.
Clark and the Gauchos will now prepare for a midweek matchup against Notre Dame on Wednesday, March 11, before resuming Big West play at Cal Poly on Saturday, March 14. All four games will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available.
