SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — With UC Santa Barbara on summer break, 19 members of the Gaucho Baseball team have spread out across the country to compete in wood-bat summer baseball leagues, ranging as far north as Canada and as far east as Cape Cod in Massachusetts.
Â
Two Gauchos are staying right here in the 805 though, with pitchers
Calvin Proskey and
AJ Krodel suiting up for the Santa Barbara Foresters. Krodel was the Foresters' Pitcher of the Year and the California Collegiate League's strikeout king last summer, as well as a CCL All-Star.
Raymond Olivas also enjoyed an all-star summer with the Walnut Creek Crawdads in 2025;
Hudson Aber will pitch in Walnut Creek this summer.
Â
Meanwhile, Olivas is one of four Gauchos bound for the prestigious Cape Cod League and one of three on the roster of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Outfielder
Liam Barrett and lefty pitcher
Van Froling will also don Hyannis' orange and blue this summer, while Barrett's outfield partner
Rowan Kelly will play for the Orleans Firebirds.
Â
In the Midwest, three Gauchos are set for action in the Northwoods League. Outfielder
Jack Haferkamp is headed to Duluth to play for the Huskies, who reached the NWL Championship Game with help from Santa Barbara's Kelly and
Nate Vargas in 2025.
Nico Libed returns to the Mankato Moondogs, where he played (and faced Kelly and Vargas in the Great Plains Division Championship Game) in 2025.
Xavier Esquer will join up with the La Crosse Loggers.
Â
None of those three will be the northernmost Gaucho this summer though, as
Max Stagg returns to the Edmonton Riverhawks of the West Coast League, where he was a fan favorite last summer. A total of nine UC Santa Barbara student-athletes will be in action in the WCL this summer, with three of them —Â
Jordan Marian,
Gavin Moran and
Tyler Walton — set to be teammates on the Ridgefield Raptors in Vancouver, Washington. Inland up the Columbia River Gorge,
Colin Beazizo is playing for the Wenatchee Applesox, while
Kole Laubach rounds out the Washington contingent in Bellingham with the Bells. Across the river in Oregon,
Josh Jannicelli and
Ryan Severns are set to team up for the Corvallis Knights, and
Evan Thomas has already gotten some productive at-bats in for the Springfield Drifters.
