Biography

The leader of the Gaucho men's throw squad, AlbertHughes moved to fifth all-time on the UCSB list with a 199'6personal best in the hammer to highlight a stellar junior season.He qualified for the NCAA First Round and held the lead after thefirst flight of throwing, eventually placing 17th overall. He is atwo-time Big West silver medalist in the hammer. 

2013-2014 
Claimed four victories in the hammer during his juniorcampaign. Punched an NCAA First Round qualifying throw at the BigWest Challenge, launching the hammer 199'1. Came back at the CalPoly Dual Meet and captured the win in the hammer with a PR throwof 199'6. Placed second at the Big West Championships in the hammerfor the second year in a row with a mark of 195'8. At the NCAAFirst Round he held the lead after the first flight of 16 with athrow of 197'3, which ended up being the 17th best mark overall.Threw 191'2 at the Cal-Nevada Championships to take second. Perhapshis most memorable moment came in the discus at the Cal Poly DualMeet as both teams were dead locked in a tie with one round ofthrowing remaining. 

With the entire Gaucho contingent cheering him on via theadjacent high jump apron, Hughes stomped into the throwing cage andentered the circle huffing with determination. He wound his 2kimplement and uncorked a lifetime best throw of 164'6, propellingthe Gauchos to victory with his come from behind win. In a threepoint swing of the disc, the UCSB men moved to 7-2 against theMustangs over the previous nine meetings. 

2012-2013 
Won five meets during his sophomore campaign in thehammer. Set a personal best at the Big West Championships of 183'9to take the silver medal in the hammer. Second best throw of theyear in the hammer came at the UC Irvine Spring Break Meet with amark of 182'2. Won the discus on his last throw at the Cal PolyDual Meet to help lead the Gaucho men to a narrow victory. Seasonbest throw in the discus was 163'6- set at the Big WestChallenge. 

2011-2012
Threw a season best of 151'4 in discus throw at OxyInvitational. Set a lifetime best in the javelin of 165'7 at theBig West Challenge Cup. Was a key scorer for the Gauchos in thejavelin at the Cal Poly Dual meet.
