SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
A day after swamping its top Big West rival Pacific, the UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team defeated UC Davis by a score of 6-1, but the match was closer than the score indicated.
While UCSB won the doubles point with relative ease, the singles were another matter.
At No. 1, Nick Brotman capped a perfect 4-0 week with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over the Aggies' Jayce Fitch. At No. 2, Bijan Hejazi topped UC Davis' Mike Chin, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3, Anders Dalskov became the third Gaucho to lose a first set and yet win his match. Dalskov topped the Aggies' Justin Garcia, 6-7, 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 4, Elad Stern swept Davis' Casey McMakin, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 5, Gaucho Carsten Thorstensen was edged by Henri Landers, 7-6, 5-7, 10-3.
Finally, at No. 6, Max Taylor swept UCD's Dan Elefant, 7-5, 6-2.
The victory is UCSB's seventh in its last nine matche and it gives the Gauchos an overall record of 11-7 and a Big West m ark of 3-0. While the Aggies are a provisional member of the league in other sports, they are a full member in men's tennis.
Up next for UCSB is an April 8 contest at the University of San Diego which will begin at 1:00 p.m. On April 9, the Gauchos will travel to San Diego State for another 1:00 p.m. contest.
