PALO ALTO, Calif. - Tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara used a pair of third-quarter offensive explosions on Sunday to post a pair of wins in the Nor Cal Tournament at Stanford, Calif. The Gauchos went 3-1 in the tourney and finished ninth outß of 16 teams.

In its first match of the day, UCSB trailed Pepperdine 5-4 entering the third stanza. The Gauchos, however, outscored the Waves 6-0 in the third to take a commanding 10-5 edge into the final quarter. Santa Barbara used a 3-1 advantage in the fourth quarter to post a 13-6 win. Freshman Tamas Donauer and junior Matt Dale each had three goals to lead the way. Sophomore Matt Knudtsen and freshman Sean Castillo each added a pair of scores for the Gauchos. Junior goalkeeper Rich Wright had six saves in his three quarters of work while freshman Michael Robinson had two in his foruth-quarter stint.

In the ninth-place match against Navy, the script was similar. UCSB led 7-6 at halftime and then notched six third-quarter goals to carry a 13-9 into the final frame. Navy outscored the Gauchos 2-1 in the fourth quarter, but it was too late and Santa Barbara coasted to a 14-11 win. Sophomore Travis Watts scored a career-high five goals in the win over Navy. Junior Ross Sinclair, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week last week, had a pair of goals, as did Dale, who had five on the day. In goal, Wright had a complete game with nine saves.

UCSB head coach Wolf Wigo's team had a successful 3-1 showing at Stanford. Wigo was a four-time All-American in Palo Alto.

With the two wins on Sunday, UCSB is now 10-3 on the season. The Gauchos, who have yet to play a home match, will play their annual Alumni match on Saturday, Sept. 23. UCSB will play its next official match on Friday, Sept. 29, when it hosts UC San Diego in a 4:00 contest at Campus Pool.
