The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team was unable to overcome UNLV Friday evening in the opening match of the UNLV Invitational, falling to the Rebels in three games, 30-23, 30-24, 30-28. Senior Jamie Garbisch was the only Gaucho that collected double-digit kills in the match, tallying 14 total.
With the loss, the Gaucho season record drops to 2-3 overall while the Rebels now stand at 5-2.
UCSB was outhit by UNLV .198 to .142 on the match and the Rebels also managed 51 kills versus the Gauchos' 43. Garbisch led the team with 14 kills, but senior Olivia Waldowski was the most efficient hitter delivering nine kills with a .333 hitting percentage and a team-leading five blocks. Kayce Matthess led with 24 assists while Stephanie Brandt had 14. Emily Hendrickson tallied 15 digs in the match. Notably, junior middle blocker Brett Quirarte posted four block assists in the match giving her 100 career block assists.
The Rebels' Brittani Lumsden had a team-leading 18 kills in the win. Melody Nua tallied 42 assists and Jada Walker lead with 23 digs.
In game one, the Rebels took the early lead and relinquished it only once before taking the 30-23 win while outhitting the Gauchos .275 to .216.
Game two saw the Gauchos take the initial lead with a kill by Rebecca Saraceno but the Rebels quickly got on pace and put up three-straight kills to take command. The second game of the night only saw the Gauchos ahead once more before the Rebels captured a 30-24 win.
UCSB put up a tough fight in game three. With the Rebels ahead 17-10, UCSB chipped away at the UNLV lead and eventually tied things up at 23-23. The score was tied two more times at 24-24 and then 28-28. Jessica Walters and Lauren Miramontes landed back-to-back kills to take the game, 30-28.
The Gauchos will look to recover from Friday's loss on Saturday afternoon as they continue action at the UNLV Invitational with a match against Xavier at 2:30 p.m. at UNLV's Cox Pavilion.
