BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal scored with just one
second remaining in the first overtime period to defeat UC Santa
Barbara, 2-1, in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship
Second Round on Sunday afternoon at the Golden Bears' Edwards
Stadium, ending the Gauchos' postseason run.
Michael
Tetteh broke a scoreless tie with 8:14 to go in regulation to
put the Gauchos up 1-0. Tetteh had been subbed in prior to Josue Madueno's
throw-in on the right side of the field. Madueno sent the ball
directly to Tetteh who shot to the far left side of the Cal
goal.
The lead did not last long, however. With just 1:40 left on the
clock, Cal kicked the ball towards the box and hit a Gaucho
defender. The official ruled it a handball and awarded a penalty
kick to the Golden Bears.
Gaucho goalkeeper Sam Hayden chose the
correct side and dove to his right, but Servando Carrasco was able
to place the shot over Hayden to tie the game at one-all and send
it into overtime.
With the clock winding down on the first overtime period,
Anthony Avalos drew Hayden out of the goal on the left side before
passing the ball to Davis Paul, who scored on a wide-open net with
one second remaining.
"I tell our players, you control what you can control," said
head coach Tim
Vom Steeg. "Our guys played their hearts out with a man
down."
The Gauchos played all but 25 minutes of the match a man-down
after Luis
Silva was red carded in the first half when he collided with
Carrasco going for a 50-50 ball.
Even after losing a player, UCSB managed to out-shoot the Golden
Bears, 6-5 in the first half. For the match, Cal out-shot the
Gauchos, 18-16. It was the first team to do so in 26 matches. UCSB
held a 9-7 advantage in shots on-goal.
Danny
Barrera and Sam
Garza led the Gauchos with four shots apiece and Barrera had
three on-frame. In goal, Sam Hayden made five
saves for UCSB.
UCSB ended the season with a 14-5-3 record, marking its 10th
consecutive winning season. The Gauchos were making their ninth
straight NCAA Tournament appearance and its ninth appearance in the
tournament's second round. UCSB won the Big West Championship for
the first time in program history this year and had a total of nine
players named to All-Big West teams.
Sunday's game was the last in the blue and gold for Gaucho
seniors Michael Boxall, Joe Eubanks and
Sam
Hayden.
This marks the third time that Cal has ended UCSB's NCAA
Tournament run in the second round. They did so with a 2-1 victory
in 2002 and a 3-2 double overtime win in 2008. The Golden Bears
will advance to play Brown in the third round next Sunday.
UCSB is the proud host of 2010 Men's College Cup, which is being held on
