Box Score SANTA BARBARA,
Calif. – A pair of defensive mistakes led to two UC
Davis goals on Friday night as the visiting Aggies won a 2-1
overtime decision over UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference
opener for both teams on Friday night.
The Gauchos (3-7-1 overall, 0-1-0
in the Big West) dominated UCD (6-4-1 overall, 1-0-0 in the Big
West) in the first half, but had nothing to show for it.
In the second half, the Aggies had
the run of play and got on the board first when UCSB suffered its
first defensive lapse.
In the 76th minute a
Gaucho defender dropped a poor pass to goalkeeper Makenna
Henry and Aggie forward Kelly Allison snuck in, took the poor
feed, dribbled past Henry and scored into the open net.
Santa Barbara tied the score at the
85:41 mark and the goal was a beauty.
Dyanne
Anderson worked a UCD defender and then blasted an absolutely
perfect cross from 24 yards out to the right of the goal. The
ball went just beyond the left, outside post where Madison Beckley
flew in and headed a shot inside the post to tie the score, 1-1, in
the 86th minute.
Both teams got opportunities in the
final minutes of regulation, but neither could break through.
Davis scored the game-winner on
another Gaucho defensive mistake. A UCSB midfielder played a
header into the left side of the box and a defender tried to clear
it, but it was deflected by Ashley Edwards and rolled towards the
front of the goal mouth. Sierra Drizin, behind the keeper,
seized the opportunity and shoved home the game-winner at the 98:00
mark.
While UCSB dominated the first
half, they were outshot 16-8 for the match. The Aggies had a
13-4 edge in the second half and overtime. Henry
finished with four saves for the Gauchos while Taylor Jern had
eight for Davis.
Santa Barbara, which has a
three-game losing streak, returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept.
30. The Gauchos will take-on the University of the Pacific at
Meredith Field at Harder Stadium at noon.
