While Derek Shoemaker and Anthony Buljan both found the back of the net in tonight's game against UCLA, their goals would not be enough to defeat the top-ranked team. The Bruins won 9-4.
Reed Cotterill scored the first goal for the Gauchos in response to a Bruin goal a minute earlier. However, the Bruins would counter a few seconds later with another score, bringing the score to 2-1 with the opposing team in the lead.
UCSB had a rough second quarter with the Bruins scoring five goals to zero for most of the period. Derek Shoemaker finally broke the Bruin scoring streak with just 1:11 left in the quarter. The Gauchos ended the half trailing UCLA 7-2.
At the beginning of the third quarter, Shane Hauschild scored the only goal of the quarter off of a penalty, making the score 7-3.
Neither team scored again until 4:40 was left on the clock, when the Bruins scored back-to-back, boosting the score by two points to 9-3. The Gauchos would respond with one final goal to end the game. The final score was 9-4, UCLA.
Senior Chris Whitelegge tallied 11 saves against UCLA's offense.
The Gauchos will play UCSD tomorrow evening, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in San Diego, Calif.
